Spooky September

A spooky TBR for the month of September? SIGN ME UP!

Honestly, over the years I didn’t think my reading tastes would involve me liking “spooky” books. When I was little my cousins came over to babysit and they happened to watch a goosebumps or horror movie that had ventriloquist dolls coming out of the sewers. Ever since then I have been terrified of spooky and horror movies. However, throughout recent years I have come to devour YA horror novels (still can’t watch scary movies or I will have nightmares for a week straight). My first YA horror novel was The Merciless by Danielle Vega. Since reading that book I have the need to read all the YA horror novels.

With the spooky season coming up and me wanting to read more horror and spooky books I decided that “Spooky September” should be my TBR theme for the month. Listed below are the books that I plan to read in September.

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin, Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake, Contagion by Erin Bowman, One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus, and The Last Life of Prince Alastor by Alexandra Bracken.

August 29th: I Failed at NEWTS and That’s OK

As I’m sitting here typing this I realized I absolutely failed at the NEWTS readathon this month and that’s okay. I thought this month would be full speed ahead and a straight shot to the end of the reading race, but instead there were a few detours along the way. I was sick for a week, had a death in the family, work was insane and I was watching copious amounts of Netflix and movies with my boyfriend Sam. But you know what? I honestly don’t care that I didn’t reach my reading goal.

I think the biggest realization that has come to me this year and specifically this summer is that everyone has a different reading pace and that’s okay. It’s okay for me to read 2 books for one month and 10 the next month. But being a Booktuber the pressure is on to continue to read all the books and quite frankly, I don’t feel that pressure anymore and it’s amazing. Did I fail at reading every day and the NEWTs readathon I was *attempting this month, yes, but that’s okay.

All I can do is try. Try my hardest to read. To make time to read. And I’m excited to say I’ll be continually trying to read for 30 minutes for every day in September and documenting it. There are so many spooky books that I NEED to get to this fall and I couldn’t be more excited to continue to strive towards my goals. I can’t wait to see where my fall reading adventures take me.

August 13th: Ready To Be Back

Ugh. I’ve been sick. I’ve had allergies. But AT LAST, I finally feel better. And it’s wonderful to not have a Kleenex shoved up my nose 24/7. Last week I did not get a lot of reading done due to being sick and sleeping. Then over the weekend, I went to the Iowa State Fair for the first time ever which was a fun weekend adventure to get away from everything. I saw the cutest baby cow (pictured below), ate a bunch of fried food, and saw lots of animals. IMG_2990But now that my body is under control, I finally got to sit down and read for a half-hour tonight. And man did it feel refreshing. I got sucked back into Magnus Chase, which I’m enjoying at the moment. According to Goodreads, I’m only 34% complete with this book. This is a frustrating spot where I don’t want to be in for this month since it is the NEWTS readathon and I’m trying to get a lot of reading accomplished. But my plan for the rest of the week is to take care of myself, cook lots of homemade meals, exercise, and read to stay healthy and not fall back into a week of misery again! Below is the progress so far for this month. August 13

August 8th: Under the Weather

And then I got sick. Bleh. Since Tuesday the 6th, I have been coming home from work taking a nap, being awake enough to eat dinner, and go back to sleep for the rest of the night in prep for the next day. After a few days, I’m finally getting back to feeling a bit better and more like myself. Right now my body doesn’t feel completely exhausted but now I have this wonderful cough and sore throat. 😦 But on the bright side, I should be back to reading today! I am feeling a bit better, I no longer have a headache, and I’m starting to clean to make sure whatever I have doesn’t spread to anyone else or my boyfriend. Expect a reading update later today for today’s progress before the weekend begins!

August 4th: Hot Mess

August 4th. I’m basically failing at this point of my goal. I spent most of Sunday spending some quality time with my mom and shopping for most of the day. It’s actually quite rare that she shops and enjoys it. While we sweated our butts off at a warehouse sale, I didn’t get much reading done. Once we had our day trip wrapped up, I came home and made fish tacos (for the first time) and cleaned my apartment. By 10ish I was ready for sleep and I went to bed. While I read barely anything… on the positive side, I actually READ 7 PAGES! I can’t beat myself up over not meeting my reading goal, but I still have to remain positive! 7 pages is better than none! Hopefully, later in the week, I can get back on track.

August 2 & 3 Update

Being 3 days into my reading challenge I’ve already noticed a reading pattern. I’m doing the bare minimum. I’m getting my 30 mins in and I’m just being lazy and not challenging myself to read more. Today is Sunday, August 4th. Which means it’s the last day before the new work week starts. When August 1st hit I started a new book. That book is Mangus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan. I’m hoping to finish this book by the end of the week. Since I have read a total of 83 pages so far, that means I need to read at least 68 pages each day this week in order to finish my goal. Will I achieve this weekly goal? Stay tuned to find out later this week!

August Daily Reading Goal

After the Reading Rush (previously The Booktubeathon) ended I’ve been on this reading high. But there has been this thought that I had throughout all of July that I’m going to do in August. That thought has turned into a goal I am challenging myself for the month of August is… Reading for 30 minutes EVERY SINGLE DAY.

I did this a lot in grade school, middle, and even high school. I remember vividly we always had the first 20ish minutes or so to read in one of my language art classes one year in high school and the number of books that I finished was at an all-time high. Since then community college never did anything like that. My adult job and day to day life don’t make me do that. So I thought what the heck let’s bring this back and see what happens.

My focus is to read all the books I own! Maybe not all, but most. The fall release season is fast approaching and I need to get my butt in gear if I want to catch up on series or just read older books that have been on my bookshelves the longest before I can buy any more books.

At the end of each daily blog post, I will most likely end with a chart of my reading progress. This will track the number of pages that I have read so far for the month of August! I’m so excited to get back into truly loving reading and defeat my TBR pile once and for all!
